If you’ve ever attended a dance club or an event where you saw hundreds of people moving around to music, only to turn around and watch an older couple dancing salsa to it you may have thought to yourself that dancing is for the young and handsome. Or maybe you thought of ballroom dancing as something that only the rich and famous do. But in fact, there is a whole world of dancing out there for anyone of any age and fitness level. You don’t have to be looking for a career in dance to enjoy it. There are things to consider before you enroll in a class or learn on your own.
Consider dance type:
First and foremost you have to decide what type of dancing you want to do. Do you want to learn ballroom dancing, tap dancing, modern dance styles, or country dancing? Ballroom is very competitive, there are many different types of dancers and many different skill levels, so if you’re looking for a beginner class you will probably find it difficult. Salsa, tap, and many dances are much easier to learn.
Floor work is the key to many different types of dances and there are several different types of aerials that you could choose to learn. Aerials are made up of two or more floor steps which, when done right, look like they belong together, but they really don’t. A good example of this would be a Tae Bo dance or a hip-hop step.
Consider dance classes:
A good way to get started in dancing is to take dance classes because this will help you to learn how to dance with someone else and to improve your dance floor presence. The first steps involve partnering with a partner, but you will eventually want to go to competitions so that you can display your dancing skills on the dance floor. If you aren’t sure about the type of dancing you want to do, look for a dance studio with a friendly, experienced teacher who can tell you what you should be looking for.
Consider dress code:
There are also things to consider when you start dancing that relate to your clothing. For example, if you’re new to dancing and are looking forward to competitions, you may want to wear clothing that allows you to move freely and to protect yourself from injuries. You should consider using music that motivates you, such as salsa or meringue.
